Method

Ready-to-cook vegan protein: no flour, powders or vital wheat gluten. All numbers are computed from label values per 100 g of edible product, pack size and shop price.

Protein % of calories

protein g × 4 ÷ kcal × 100, with kcal taken as the larger of the label value and 4P + 4C + 9F, so labels rounded per serving cannot push a product past 100%. First ranking key in every table. Plain beats flavoured: marinades lower the ratio and you season it yourself anyway.

CategoryBest foundMedian country bestCountries
Seitan 87% Czechia 76% 44
Tofu 91% United States 46% 47
Tempeh 61% Estonia 44% 43
Other 100% Canada 68% 33

Grams of protein per euro

protein per 100 g × edible g ÷ 100 ÷ price in EUR. Second ranking key. Jarred products use drained weight. Non-euro prices use the exchange rate on the country's check date; no purchasing-power adjustment.

55%+ protein sources

A product at 55%+ protein calories, whatever it is made of: seitan, lupin tempeh, fava tofu and meat analogues count alike. Snacks (tofu bars, protein bars, jerky) and dry textured protein (TVP, soy chunks) never count. Forms:

PartPointsHow
55%+ supply50 Every route (a product with 55%+ of calories from protein at a shop) is worth channel × form × ratio; routes under 3 g protein/€ are crazy-priced and do not count. Channel: supermarket's own online shop 1.0, other webshop 0.65, walk-in only 0.3. Ratio: 55% counts 0.5, 75%+ counts 1. Routes combine with diminishing returns (1 − Π(1 − 0.12 × route)), so one ideal route gives 12%, ten give 72% and twenty give 92%. Then 50% of the full supply plus 50% of the supply without the country's most important shop: one product at one shop is fragile.
Variety20 Distinct kinds among 55%+ sources, by base (wheat, soy, lupin, fava, pea, mycoprotein) and format (block, slices, patty, pieces, mince); flavours count once. Points for 0, 1, 2, 3, 4+ kinds: 0.0, 4.0, 8.0, 11.0, 13.0, 15.0, 17.0, 18.0, 19.0, 20.0.
Value15 Best g protein/€ among 55%+ sources; full points at 30 g/€.
Tofu/tempeh15 Best route to a scored product below 55%: channel × form × ratio, from 35% (nothing) to 50% (full). +10% if dry textured protein is sold.

Not modelled: whether a shop really delivers, stock levels, bulk ordering and delivery costs. These cannot be known without ordering; leave-one-out stands in for them. Map classes: under 40, 40-54, 55-69, 70-79, 80+. Scores as JSON: scores.json.

Exclusions

Crazy-priced listings, oil-heavy or breaded products well under the category norm, and anything that does not ship to the country. Listed per country under "Checked and left out".

Sources

Online supermarkets, specialist webshops, brand sites and Open Food Facts, per country. Products without a published panel are listed as "not published" and not scored.

Shipping origin

Country pages show where you can have food delivered. A shop may ship from abroad. "Ships from" identifies the dispatch country where a source confirms it, separately from where the brand is based or the food is made. A local website address does not establish a local warehouse. Unverified shipping origins are marked in the shop details.

Brand highlights

We highlight a brand once per country page when sources establish all three: it is based in that country, its entire food range is vegan, and its founders, family or workers ultimately control it. Control by an outside corporate group or investment firm disqualifies it. A named founder or a small-looking brand is insufficient evidence of ownership.

Expand "Local independent vegan brand" for the sources. Unknown facts mean no highlight. The highlight describes the brand, not the product's manufacturing location, and does not affect protein rankings or country scores.

Other known brand facts appear under "About" once per brand on each country page. Direct confirmations from the site owner are attributed. Investor backing is recorded separately from ownership control.
